Frequently asked questions

1. Who we are

What is OneWorld Radio?

OneWorld Radio offers services and networking for broadcasters and civil society organisations that use radio for human rights and sustainable development. This portal aims to be a tool for broadcasters - a place on the internet where they can find radio programmes for exchange and all the information from the sector of radio for development they need - news, funding and training opportunities and manuals. They can also use OneWorld Radio to network with each other by searching the OneWorld Radio directory of members and sharing information about their activities.

OneWorld Radio is a part of OneWorld.net, an international network of over 1200 partner organisations harnessing the internet to promote human rights and sustainable development worldwide.

Who funds OneWorld Radio?

OneWorld Radio is supported by Department for International Development, DfID, as part of the 'Bridging the Digital Divide' Initiative, which includes AMARC and the Panos Institute.

We are also funded by DfID, within the Catalyzing Access To ICTs (Information Communication Technology) in Africa - CATIA Radio programme - a partnership of OneWorld, AMARC and Panos.

OneWorld Radio Southeast Europe is funded by Hivos, www.hivos.nl, and the OneWorld AIDS Radio is funded by the Parthenon Trust.

Does OneWorld Radio fund projects?

No, OneWorld Radio does not fund projects. However, we are interested in working with other organisations on joint productions and training on development issues such as HIV/AIDS, children, women and use of ICTs. If you have some ideas or suggestions, don't hesitate to get in touch with us on radio@oneworld.net.

4. Membership

Who can be a member?

Any person or organization that is committed to the use of audio and radio to effect a positive change in our society can become a member of OneWorld Radio.

Members include:
  • Broadcasters: international and local broadcaster networks; radio stations - large and small, commercial and community, private and state. Also independent producers and production houses.
  • Non-governmental organizations (NGOs): non-profit organizations who work in the human rights and development field that use or produce audio as part of their public campaign work. Includes health organizations, advocacy organizations, distance learning institutions, and many other fields. It also includes organisations who support the sector, such as funders, advisors, consultants etc.
  • Individuals, academics, and researchers: includes a wide range of experts who are working in the field of 'radio for change'.
  • Trainers and training organizations. Those who assist broadcasters in using radio to the best of their ability are an important part of OneWorld Radio. We welcome individuals who offer training, training organizations and regional, or international training bodies.

Is this an exclusive network of people and organisations?

OneWorld Radio is primarily for 'radio for development' broadcasters - or anyone using, or thinking of using, audio in their human rights work. However, anyone can browse the site and listen to audio produced by the OneWorld Radio members.

Is there a membership fee?

No. Membership is free.

How do I join?

Click on join in the Our Community section of the website, then read and agree to the membership agreements, and fill out the joining form. We will contact you when your membership has been processed.

5. Audio exchange

Who can listen to audio stored on OneWorld Radio?

Any online user can listen online to all the available audio.

Who can upload and download audio on OneWorld Radio?

Only members. This is in order to ensure quality and adherence to the principals of OneWorld. See the membership agreement for more details.

Do all members have to upload and download audio?

No, membership is for everyone in the 'radio for change' sector, broadcasters and non-broadcasters alike. The audio exchange service is however one of the major aspects of the portal, so we do encourage our members to upload as much of their material as possible. We do want to ensure a good balance between producers and visitors, and North and South usage, so we encourage all members to contribute audio to the exchange if they can.

Members can download freely. But, only using this service for downloading will limit the service and the scope of audio available.

Where can I get technical help in using the OneWorld Radio audio exchange?

For information on how to upload download audio or how to fill in the joining form and search the website, click on how to use this site in the Training section. If you still have problems contact us at radio@oneworld.net.

How can I use the OneWorld Radio audio exchange service if I am not adequately connected online?

We are committed to enabling our members to upload their material on the site, so we are happy to go through the whole process of how to use the site in a training session face-to face or on the phone. If you still can't upload your material, send it to us on a CD, tape, or minidisk by ordinary mail and we'll put it online. To get postal address for your region, email us on radio@oneworld.net.

What kind of programmes can I upload to OneWorld Radio?

Topic

Programmes covering any development topic, such as HIV/AIDS, children's rights, women's rights, the environment, or freedom of expression

Audio format

We only accept the most common digital audio formats - MP3 and Real Audio. If you need help on creating digital files in these formats - take a look at our comprehensive training manual for a step-by-step guide.

Audio file size

We've restricted the file size of audio programmes to 3.6 MB to ensure relatively easy upload and download of audio files. Remember, files bigger than this will be difficult for people to access in places where the internet connection is slow or unstable. If you're encoding in MP3 or Real Audio format using broadcast quality settings (min. 22,000, 16 bit, mono), 3.6 MB is the 'time' equivalent of around 7-10 minutes of speech. If your programme is more than 3.6 MB, the server will automatically disconnect the upload.

Programme details

Submit as much information about your programme as possible, by filling in the corresponding fields in the upload form. This will help users to find your audio.

Who will be able to access to the programmes that I upload?

Anyone can browse and listen online to any programme on OneWorld Radio, but only other members will be able to download them. You will be able to make changes to programme details once you upload it.
Also, you can request monthly statistics of the usage of your audio (who downloaded which of your programmes, and when).
